"Welcome to #140edu: Exploring the State of Education NOW
This event will be taking place August 2nd and 3rd at the 92nd Street Y in New York City.
Ever since the first #140conf event in New York City back in June 2009, we have been looking at the effects of the real-time web on Education. To date, the #140conf events have provided a platform for: students, elementary and secondary school teachers, college professors and high school principals. At a recent #140conf it was said that “in 1920 being illiterate meant not being able to read or write. In 2010 being illiterate means not knowing how to surf the net.”
In an attempt to provide more attention and more voices to the educators of the world, we [Jeff Pulver @jeffpulver] have partnered with Chris Lehmann (@chrislehmann) – Principal of the Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia.
The changes in the way we live our lives must create change in the way we teach and learn. The real-time web should create profound changes in the way we think about what, how and why students and teachers can do, create and communicate. The very nature of what we consider “school” should be radically different given the powerful reach of the communicate tools our students have at their disposal. #140edu is dedicated to exploring and expanding that change."

The School at Columbia University is launching a new teaching/learning institute called Teach21. There will be a series of workshops and daily keynote speakers from June 20-23rd. On the website, Teach21 is described as follows:
Teach21 is a new professional development institute that focuses on 21st Century teaching and learning. Developed and taught by The School at Columbia faculty, the workshops are grounded in cutting edge pedagogy and classroom experience. Descriptions of half-day, full day and two day workshops can be found in the Workshops tab. Each day will begin at 9 am with a Keynote speaker. If you register for any workshop you can attend all Keynotes. Lunch will be provided for all participants. Register before June 1st for early bird rates on workshops. (from the website)

Collaborating with New Media in the 21st Century Classroom (Tuesday 6/21/2011, 10:00am - 12:30pm)
We will look at different 21st century communication tools and demonstrate how they play out in the classroom and in the school of the future. The School at Columbia has built a web 2.0 "safe playground" in which students, starting in 3rd grade, learn to contribute to online culture building. By providing this mediascape for students, we grapple with a number of questions: How are our students using these tools? How are we teaching our students to use these tools appropriately? By asking these questions, we reflect on the impact of new media tools in the 21st century classroom.
